7 Steps to a better work/life balance in yachting
Apr 27, 2023
Yachting is a dream job for many of us. However, it’s also a super demanding job that requires long hours, dealing with demanding guests, and maintaining the yacht in pristine condition. This can often lead to a crap work/life balance and unhealthy habits.
Don’t stress, we’ve all been there! Here are some easy ways to improve your work/life balance and health while working as a yachtie. No - I’m not talking about jumping overboard and swimming to the nearest island (although that may seem tempting at times).
🧘🏻♀️ Make Time for Yourself
I get it, you’re working hard, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t take time for yourself. Whether it’s reading a book, going for a walk, doing a meditation or just watching a movie, make sure to take some time to do something you enjoy. It may seem counterintuitive, but taking breaks can actually improve productivity and help you recharge. Sneak in a little "me time" here and there.
For example, you could sneak off to your cabin for a quick nap or indulge in some guilty pleasure TV shows during your off hours (10/10 recommend Ted Lasso, Beef & Game of Thrones!)
🏃♀️ Stay Active
Being a yachtie often means spending long hours on your feet, but that’s no excuse to skip your exercise routine (unless you’re on a suuuuper busy trip – totally understand naps are more important!). Sure, you may not have a gym on board, but that doesn't mean you can't get a little workout in.
Try doing some burpees or pushups in your cabin. There are plenty of bodyweight exercises you can do in your cabin or on deck. If you’re lucky enough to have a gym on board, make use of it! Not only will exercise help you stay healthy, but it can also reduce stress and improve your mood.
🥑 Nourish yourself with Healthy Food
It’s easy to fall into the trap of eating sooo much junk food and drinking sugary drinks when you’re on board all day and there’s a cupboard full of it! But it’s important to fuel your body with healthy foods too.
Make sure you’re getting enough whole foods like fruits, veggies, and lean proteins whenever possible. And don’t forget to drink plenty of water to stay hydrated. Carry your water bottle with you while you’re on the move!
Eating well can be a challenge when you're working long hours and dealing with limited food options. But with a little creativity, you can still fuel your body with healthy foods. For example, if there’s some yummy leftover veggies after dinner, save them for the next day!
Remember the 80/20 rule – 80% nourishing foods & 20% enjoy the chocolate and other stuff!
💤 Get Enough Sleep
Getting enough sleep can be a struggle when you're constantly on the move and tt can be tempting to stay up late partying during downtime, especially as a Junior, but getting enough sleep is SOOO crucial for your health and well-being. Aim for at least 7-8 hours of sleep each night when you can. If you have trouble sleeping, try setting up a bedtime routine to help you relax and wind down. Maybe you could take a warm shower, sip on some herbal tea, and listen to soothing music before bed.
🚧 Set Boundaries
It can be difficult to separate work and personal life when you’re living and working on the same boat. But setting boundaries is important for maintaining a healthy work/life balance. Make sure to communicate with your crew & HODs about your needs and priorities. And don’t be afraid to say no if you feel like you’re being asked to do a completely unreasonable amount of stuff! You’ve only got a certain number of hours in the day!
👭🏻 Connect with Others
Working on a superyacht can be isolating at times, but it’s important to connect with others to maintain your mental health. Make an effort to get to know your crew and build relationships, and also stay in touch with family and friends back home – WHILE ALSO TAKING TIME FOR YOU!!!
🏖️ Take Time Off
Finally, don’t forget to take time off when you can. Even if it’s resting in your cabin, or you get just a few hours to explore a port or relaxing on deck when you can, taking time away from work can help you recharge and refocus.
To wrap up, making small changes to your daily routine can have a big impact on your work/life balance and overall health. By making time for yourself, staying active, eating well, getting enough sleep, setting boundaries, connecting with others, and taking time off, you can improve your well-being and enjoy your job even more. You can’t look after others unless you look after yourself first!
So, don’t be afraid to take a step back and focus on your health and happiness. Your mind and body will thank you for it.
